At the County Wicklow Constituency Council meeting of the Labour Party that took place in Ashford on Thursday, May 29th, a vote was passed unanimously condemning the Government decision to close in effect the I.T. Centres established to serve local communities across County Wicklow.

Deputy Liz McManus proposed the vote of censure. "This is part of a Government assault on community services which is leading to job losses and a loss of training opportunities", said Deputy McManus. "It was expected that a few centres might be affected. Instead all centres are to be ended in a shocking decision that tears the heart out of this valuable service.

"These Centres are of great value to the local community and are not a profit-making business. People who never knew how to turn on a computer have progressed to getting their ECDL Certificate together with confidence to go out and get employment with their new skills. The figures are there to prove that people who have been on this course are now working.

"I am determined to fight this decision and I am calling on Minister Dick Roche to explain publicly why this Government is closing down services in County Wicklow at a time when his attention seems focussed totally on European issues", concluded Deputy McManus.
